Dia do Pai

Dia do Pai no Lancaster College Valongo

História do Dia do Pai

Happy Women's Day 2018

The idea first came in 1910 but was only adopted in 1975 by the United Nations.

Around the world
In some countries, such as Angola, Russia, Cuba, Vietnam and others, the day is a public holiday!! In China, it is also a holiday, but only for women!

On this day it is customary for men to give the women in their lives – friends, mothers, wives, girlfriends, daughters, colleagues, etc. – flowers and small gifts.

Here are some quotes you might find interesting:
"A woman with a voice is by definition a strong women."
"Women are the real architects of society."

"Here's to strong women:
May we know them
May we be them
May we raise them"

Praticar vela

Funny facts about Michelle Obama

MICHELE OBAMA

=> This great woman has already been the first lady of the United States. She's one of three First Ladies with a graduate degree.
She probably gave out more hugs than anyone in White House history.

=> Her great-great-grandfather was a slave!!

=> Within the family her nickname is "Miche" and her husband calls her "my rock".

=> As a young girl, she practiced playing the piano so much that she had to be told to stop.

=> Although a great athlete, she shied away from competitive sports because, her big brother says, she hated to lose.

=> Her first impression of Barack wasn't great, she'd seen his photo in the law firm directory and thought he had a big nose. Barack Obama proposed her at a fancy restaurant. The ring came on a tray with the dessert.

=> Michelle and her brother skipped second grade and learned to read by four years old.

=> Michelle is now committed on Obama Foundation.

Facts about Neymar

Neymar is a very talented football player.

He showcased his skill for years at Santos, a Brazilian team. He joined the Santos academy in 2003. This explains the many emotional tears surrounding his last game for the club.

When he joined Barcelona, he started wearing a new jersey for the first time in his footballing career.

Amazingly, Neymar scored his 100th Professional Goal on his 20th Birthday!!!!
The goal came against Palmeiras in the traditional Neymar way. But it was the timing of the goal that is the most surprising.

Not many can claim they have scored on their birthday. Few, if any, have set a milestone like this on their birthday. And hardly anyone did it at the age of the 20. Incredible.

Valentine's day poems

Get inspired by these poems chosen by our student Ema:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue
Sugar is sweet
And so are you.

Roses are red,
Pink, yellow and white,
You are my Princess,
And I am your Knight.

At school I loved
Maths, history and
Art,
Then you came
along
And stole my heart

Roses are red,
Violets are nice,
If you kisss me once
I'll kiss you twice.

NOW a poem written by our student João Pedro Martins:
"Marry me,
You are my art,
But be careful,
I can steal your heart!"

João Pedro always suggests you to enjoy this song/video:

Unusual ways to get to school

Bored about school?
Wanted to be doing something else instead?

This week our students found out how SO many youngster around the world face DANGER just to get to school. All because... THEY LOVE SCHOOL and know how important it it TO LEARN.

Don´t believe it? Just check it here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DEqSImFn70
and here:
https://allworldbest.blogspot.pt/2013/03/most-dangerous-path-to-school.html

Inspired by those real experiences, our students were asked to create a story of their own.
_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_

The most dangerous way to go to school
In Macau, pupils have to climb ropes to go to school.
Sophie is one of the pupils and she is the most determined girl of all. In 2014 when Musou Bridge was destroyed, Sophie didn`t want to miss the school, so she had an idea: to build an improvised bridge, made of ropes.
Now they still use that method to get to school and they are very happy because learning is very important and also fun .They know their future depends on how good they are at school.

A origem do lego

A few tales...

Inspired by the reality of the Niowra tribe, on the island of Papua New Guinea, our students were asked to write their own imagined tales.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/crocodile.shtml

This was the result:

TI ZÉ - A Tale
Once upon a time there was a far, far away island called Papua New Guinea.
On a tragic day, an 18-year-old boy went on an expedition with his friends through the forest.
After three hours of walking, this boy called Ti Zé decided to rest for a little bit and fell asleep. Unfortunately, he forgot to warn his friends, so he ended up lost and alone.
When he woke up he noticed a sound, the creepy walk-like sound of a crocodile and quickly picked up the spear he had on his back . Then he hid behind a bush and waited for the crocodile to go away. After that, Ti Zé returned to his village.
When he arrived to the village, he saw it had been invaded by deadly crocodiles. The only thing that remained was a bow and some arrows. No huts, no food... everything had been destroyed. As for his people, the ones who managed to escape were on top of the montain.
So, feeling angry and willing to solve the situation, brave Ti Zé picked up the only bow left and started fighting all the crocodiles. Soon, all crocodiles were gone.
When the people came down the montain, they cheered in happiness and built a statue in honour of Ti Zé.

CROCODILE FATHER FOR 1 MONTH - A Tale
On the island of Austropaupa there is a ritual for boys when they turn 18: to become accepted in the tribe as adults, teenage boys have to go through some tasks.
One of them is to find a crocodile egg in a hut which is full of dangerous obstacles. After that, they have to take care of the egg until the baby crocodile is born.
When it happens, teenagers have to be responsible for the crocodile.
During this ritual, they need to feed the crocodile with the best food and with the sacred water of the "Jaydion River". They have one month to teach the crocodile to be strong and brave.
When the crocodile becomes an adult, the boy becomes an adult, too.
This ritual is very important for the boys to learn to be responsible, hard-wroking and careful. In the future, when they have children, they can use that knowledge.

Carrousel or Merry-go-round

There is a small carousel, also know as merry-go-round, as part of the christmas decorations of the school. It has a lot of details: the music ride, the horse figures, the stairs, the people...

We can find the real-sized carousels in big winter fairs in villages around Europe. They're very traditional at Christmas.
The first one appeared in the 18th century in Europe!
They provide really fun moments for children and even adults, because people sit on an animal-like wooden figure, e.g. a horse and it moves in circles while the music is on.
Carousels are usually very shiny and colourful and they're part of everyone's childhood memories.

In 2015, Lancaster College had the opportunity to visit Brighton with a very cheerful group of students, parents, teachers and staff, who didn't miss the oportunity to ride on one of the most famous UK's carousel, in Brighton.
