New Year's resolutions

A New Year's Resolution is a commitment that a person makes to personal goals or projects.

Around the world people think about what they should change or improve in their lives and write it down.

The first record goes back to the ancient Babylonians who promised their gods that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts.

This tradition became stronger at the end of the Great Depression in the USA. People were feeling sad and depressed and needed hope. Many are the people worldwide who keep doing it.

The references to this tradition can be found in books, paintings and obviously, films. 'Bridget Jones's Diary' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQdy98B1nf0), is an example of it.

Some of the most popular goals nowadays include: saving money, losing weight, drinking less alcohol and getting a better job.

At Lancaster College Póvoa de Varzim staff and students were asked to write down their strongest goals and it is now displayed on a wall for everyone to see.

It's no surprise to see that what our students wish for 2013 is related to work and money issues.

EGG NOG

Enjoy this classic homemade Christmas drink

Ingredients

• 1140ml/2 pints whole milk, 
• 6 free-range eggs
• 50g/2oz caster sugar
• 1 vanilla pod, split
• 20 fresh cherries, stones removed and halved
• 200ml/7fl oz brandy
• cocoa powder, for dusting

Preparation method

1. Place the milk, eggs, sugar and vanilla pod in a medium pan and heat gently, without boiling, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
2. The egg nog can be chilled at this stage or served hot.
3. To serve, scatter the cherries in the bottom of each serving glass. Divide the brandy between the glasses and pour the egg nog over. Dust with cocoa powder and serve.
