Fame after de 00’s

Being a famous star 60 years ago was something that one could just dream of. Not everyone could aspire to this, even if they were actually talented, mostly because of the lack of resources and knowledge. Not everyone could afford to move to Hollywood (the place were stars are born) to pursue their dreams of becoming a real singer or a desirable actress/actor, but the ones that did become famous, were actually what the word famous means. These people were wanted and loved, they were unforgettable.

Nowadays, thanks to social media and the way things are so normalized, anyone can become famous. Just make a small TikTok or Instagram video and if you are lucky the whole world will know you, and guess what, you quickly turn into a "celebrity"!

But what is this fame? What this fame that lasts for so little... Sometimes a couple of weeks is all it takes for you to be loved and forgotten. Not to mention that you can be famous from your couch, there is no moving to other countries involved, no Visa to worry about, no cultural shock.

This is the fame that we’ve created, yes it is very convenient but it also discredits the big stars that worked so hard to get to where they are now. Stop idolizing people for zero content and begin to appreciate the creators of real art!

A healthy lifestyle

Throughout this pandemic, a lot of people are trying to improve their health, but sometimes they don't know where to start. In my opinion, looking for a healthy lifestyle is the best way to do it.

A healthy lifestyle keeps your organism balanced and doesn't cause illnesses or malaise to you.

An example of that is The Mediterranean one because more than defending a balanced diet, it also gives importance to activities such as:

  • Socializing with family and friends and sharing the meals with them;
  • Doing daily exercise, even though it isn't necessary to go to the gym to do it. This lifestyle defends that going to work or a friend’s house on foot regularly is, usually, enough;
  • Laughing often and enjoying living these are particularly important to preserve mental health. I mean, it doesn't matter having a balanced diet if you aren't happy;

In my opinion, what I have just mentioned are the most significant behaviours from The Mediterranean lifestyle, but I cannot deny that the diet matters too and, if you want to follow this lifestyle, it is crucial follow these points:

  • Eat vegetables, fruits, nuts, greens, potatoes, bread, fish, and extra virgin olive oil.
  • Eat-in moderation: Eggs, cheese, and yoghurt.
  • Rarely eat red meat.

Does this sound familiar to you? Of course it does! These points are the result of observing the food wheel or pyramid, and we can notice something else, for example, avoid:

  • Trans fats: Found in margarine;
  • Refined oils;
  • Processed meat: Processed sausages;

This diet is not too restricted since you can eat the main kinds of food, and it also advises prioritizing regional foods.

I think that, if you are trying to improve your health, this lifestyle is an awesome choice.

However, there are other good options, therefore, when you chose a lifestyle, you should be careful and in case you have any doubts, ask a nutritionist and only like that you will be sure that you got the right answer.

Still COVID-19

         When we have no idea of what we can write about, there is nothing easier than writing about the present times. And present times hold hands with covid, even though they should be social distancing, too.

Isn’t everyone tired of being at home? Yes. And don’t get me started on having to wear a mask (although sometimes it is actually helpful to hide some anger emotions). Our freedom has apparently been taken from us for good and it seems that we are almost never going to have it back.

However, thinking of it, we have spent a lot of time at home. It’s true it can get a bit boring, and, if we are students, we can get overwhelmed by online school, but we have never spent so much time with our close family – ok, we can’t put the whole family together and that’s sad – and, surely, we now have time to do things we like and we couldn’t do before. For instance, I have never read so many books before, because I used to be occupied by school work and now I am able to finish faster!

But it’s obvious I hate to be closed by four walls. Almost everyone (and I’m 99% sure everyone) does. We can’t go and see the beach. We can’t visit big cities (and how I miss going to Porto). We can’t go to school to be with our friends. We can’t see our relatives. But it’s for the bigger good. And, if it isn’t, it’s not hard to believe that it is.

I sometimes wonder how a very tiny little thing, such as a virus, has changed the course of History. But that's how life works, right? Let’s just use that as a weapon to make everything better than it was before.

How to get away with murder

 How to Get Away with Murder, released in 2014, is an American legal thriller television series, created by Peter Nowalk and produced by Shonda Rhimes and ABC Studios. The series has a total of six seasons and the last season was released in 2020.

Viola Davis, plays the main character, Annalise Keating, who is a law professor at a prestigious Philadelphia university. She is everything you hope your Criminal Law professor to be: brilliant, passionate, creative and charismatic. As fearless in the courtroom as she is in the classroom, Annalise is a defense attorney who represents the most hardened and violent criminals, who have committed everything from fraud to murder and she does anything to win their freedom back.

Every year professor Keating chooses 4 students, the most promising ones, to help her in real law cases. However, that year she chooses five instead of four and there’s a mysterious reason for it, which you find out watching the series. In fact, this TV series is full of secrets, from the beginning to the end!

Alfred Enoch, Jack Falahee, Aja Naomi King, Matt McGorry, and Karla Souza participate in the series as Keating's students, while Charlie Weber and Liza Weil are her employees. Billy Brown is a detective with the Philadelphia Police Department, also an old Annalise's lover.

The story begins when professor Keating and her five chosen students find themselves involved in a murder plot and have to find out how they are going to deal with the situation. Do you want to know more about it? Just watch it!

I definitely recommend this series to everyone who loves a good thriller, full of mystery and an amazing plot.

Beatlemanic

Everyone knows I am a beatlemaniac and it is not difficult for me to explain why I like music so much, especially why I like The Beatles so much.

My question is: How were Paul, George, Ringo and John able to compose original songs that continue to touch generations? That is so incredible, isn't it?

Out of curiosity, although it may not be my favourite song, “Let it be” should be even more appreciated. For those who don't know, Paul McCartney wrote this song because of his mother, who, after dying, appeared to him in a dream, in an anxious time for Paul, and told him that everything was going to be okay and that he just needed to let it be.

This is just one example of the incredible originality, creativity and passion that this band had for music. And now I am concerned about today's singers who can only produce industrial music.

So, can we please go back to the old times and sing loudly “Hey Jude”?

Maybe that's why people think I have an aging soul. Sometimes I feel like I was born at the wrong time. Despite that, I will continue to pay tribute to the Beatles' legacy.

So if if you're feeling sad, here's a suggestion: listen to “Here comes the sun” and you won't be blue anymore.

Our 5-year-olds love Easter!

 Hello, Hello! We are Matilde, Afonso and Francisco from Class KA5. We study English at Lancaster College – Valongo.

We love our English classes! The Institute is a nice place to study! We prefer having classes there because we don’t like computers very much and we are tired of having lessons at home… We can’t wait to be together again!

And, by the way, don’t let the Easter Bunny get away without leaving a basket full of fun!! Happy Easter!

Our Easter Traditions

Easter traditions are related with Christianity and are very important in our country.

Daniel’s traditions include going to mass, celebrating with his extended family and eating chocolate eggs and almonds.

Diogo’s traditions are giving flowers to his godparents, having Easter lunch with his parent and his grandmother and eating chocolate eggs and almonds too.

Leonor also gives flowers to her godparents and has lunch with her family.

Our teacher’s traditions are similar to ours. She also goes to mass, has lunch with her family and she paints Easter eggs.

Easter’s top 3 traditions are: the Easter egg hunt, being with family and eating chocolate. We love Easter!!!

Gender Equality

Gender equality means equal rights and freedoms, equal opportunities for participation, recognition and appreciation of women and men in all areas of society - political, economic, personal and family. However, this doesn`t happen.

It´s very important to talk about gender equality because all around the world, the situation of women is worse than that of men's, simply because they are women. The reality is even worse for women who belong to minorities, elderly women, women with disabilities, migrants, etc.

The cause of this inequality is chauvinism which is a prejudice, expressed by opinions and attitudes, which opposes equal rights between genders, privileging the male gender over the female. In other words, it is an oppression, in its most diverse forms, of women by men. Unfortunately, this prejudice is still very present in our society. Having been normalized for a long time, only a few decades ago this behaviour began to be problematized, especially by feminist movements, which fight for gender equality. Not everyone agrees this must be fought, which means that, despite feminist efforts, it is still present in several environments.

The fight against chauvinism and gender inequality is called feminism. Feminism is a social movement for civil rights, led by women, which since its origin has claimed political, legal and social equality between men and women. This performance isn`t sexist, that is, it does not seek to impose some type of female superiority, but the equality between the genders. The history of feminism begins in the French Revolution with the “Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen”, written in the year of the Revolution, which was opposed by the “Declaration of the Rights of Women and Citizens”, written by the French feminist Olympe de Gouges. For this reason, she was murdered. However, her death, considered a landmark of feminism in the world, brought some later feminist movements.

Little by little, feminist movements around the world began to gain rights claimed by women (right to education, vote, contract, property, divorce, equal pay, abortion, etc.). Although we have already won more rights for women, there is still much to change.

Have you ever...?

 HAVE YOU EVER... broken a leg?

If you have, raise a green object. If you haven't, raise a red object.

This is a fun game to play with friends and it can also be played virtually. The best part - of course - is when the losers pay a forfeit.
Can you guess who won the game? David, Beatriz or Carlos?

Online Classes…Our NEW Reality!

This Pandemic situation has changed our way of learning, at least, the method we used to use to learn. Online classes became our new reality and we have changed the classroom for the Distance Learning, the online classes…

This experience is being very challenging and demanding because it requires more attention, effort, knowledge of the online platforms and computer literacy. It is also very exigent for us, students and teacher to deal with the issues that come with the online classes like for example, the speed of internet that is not the same for all, the apps, chat that are used to replace the board are not as good as the classroom board that facilitates the learning and also the interaction between students and teacher.

We prefer to be face to face with one another and feel closer with the learning, which is only possible when we stand next to each other in the classroom environment.

Inspite all of this, the Distance Learning allowed us to improve our computer skills and be more comfortable with the use of many tools that are necessary in the online classes.

However, we felt that the online tests are more complicated as we had to learn how to control time and there wasn´t much time to write the essay and even to review it. We felt like we didn´t have time to think properly about what was asked.

We are willing to go back to on-site classes as soon as possible, that would be just GREAT!! :-)

Our opinion on... online learning versus face-to-face classes

We are the students at Lancaster College, level KC and we are anxious for our return to our face-to-face lessons.

We like the non-virtual lessons, because it is easier to learn, and we can be all together.  They are more productive, because we can write on the board, and asking questions is easier. These lessons are more fun than online lessons, because we are in touch with each other.

We like the online lessons, because we can choose different backgrounds, we learn how to use the internet together, we learn new things faster, because there isn’t as much time to play as in the other lessons, and we always arrive on time. Online classes are very active and innovative. The tests are easier, and that’s great!!!

We're happy to go on holidays, because soon face-to-face lessons will be a possibility.

Both in our non-virtual and virtual lessons we always learn together, and that is fun!!!

St Patrick's day

St. Patrick was a 5th-century missionary in Ireland, who also served as a bishop there. He was credited with bringing Christianity to parts of Ireland and was probably responsible for the Christianization of the Picts and Anglo-Saxons. He is one of the patron saints of Ireland.

St. Patrick was born in Britain within a Romanized family. At the age of 16 he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and carried into slavery in Ireland. After six years in servitude, he had a dream of his escape and fled his master. Surviving a harrowing journey back to Britain, he was eventually reunited with his family.

There are many legends associated with the life of St. Patrick. According to one, he miraculously drove all the snakes of Ireland into the sea. He is
said to have used the three leaflets of the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity. He reportedly raised as many as 33 people from the dead.

Another legend, probably the most popular, is that of the shamrock, which has him explain the concept of the Holy Trinity, three persons in one God, to an unbeliever by showing him the three-leaved plant with one stalk.

Traditionally, Irishmen have worn shamrocks, the national flower of Ireland, in their lapels on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.

The day I surfed

The fear of the sea was always present in my life, so whenever I went to the beach I wouldn't dare more than just to wet my feet. I think that happened because my parents can’t swim, so somehow they put that fear on my head… The truth is, I never dived or swam in the sea when I was a kid.

However, when I attended secondary school I was part of a badminton team and the end-of-school trip that year included a surf lesson on the beach of Matosinhos.

When I heard about the trip, my first thought was “Cristiana, you won´t do that, you have no courage!”, but all my friends wanted to go and I wanted to go with them, even if it was just to see them surf.

So, when I arrived home I told my parents about the trip and obviously their answer was “Of course you won't go on that trip”.

After a big drama to convince them, there was no way to make them change their opinion. Therefore, I had to come up with a plan to fulfill my wish.

When the big day came, I decided to go without my parents’ permission. I know it was very irresponsible… but at the time it sounded like a very good idea.

After a one-hour drive, we finally arrived to the beach and I was still in doubt if I should risk to do it or not. After a small reflection I made up my mind - after all, “if not now, then when?” and decided to give it a try.

Although, I was really afraid of the sea, in that moment all the bad thoughts went away. It felt so good in the sea that I cannot find words to describe it. It was fantastic! Amazing!

In the end, everything went well and I just loved the experience!

Radja Nainggolan - the human being behind the excelent player

There are a lot of fantastic people connected to sport I could chose to write about in this article, players and managers who have done so much for our society, by helping others that needed some help. But I think that this is the right moment to talk about him. Probably you don’t know him, and it is normal. Not everyone needs to have heard about him. In my case, I have known him since I was eight.

His name is Radja Nainggolan. He is a Belgian player and he is thirty-two years old. Before you ask, no, I’m not going to talk about the way he plays or his career. Despite being an extraordinary player, he is an extraordinary person. And that is what matters to me now.

One year ago, Radja was playing for Inter Milan, one of the best teams in Italy and in the world. Unexpectaly, his wife finds out that she has cancer. I can't imagine what Nainggolan went through during that time, but I imagine having to deal with his woman’s disease and with his niece's death, that also had cancer. With these horrible things happening in his life, he stopped to think and decided to go to his hometown’s team, Cagliari, also in Italy. But why Cagliari? Because it was where his wife was going to start her treatments.

And that’s why I admire him so much. He didn’t want money or anything like that. He only wanted to be close to his girlfriend. And that’s something that we have to learn. Questions like money or something like that don't matter, we have to do everything for ours. Because otherwise, I’m sure that they would do the same for us. Enjoy every second with your family because everything can change in one second, like Radja’s life.

Stephen King - the king of horror?

I think that everybody knows who Stephen King is, right? In my opinion, he is the best writer in the whole world. Basically he's one of the most famous writers in the world, because of his writing style and his imagination (he is out of this world!).

I have already read some of his books (not all of them...yet) and there's only one thing to say about all of them: just incredible!

Also, in each of his books, there's a short afterword to the people he loves, the ones who have helped him the most. In his last book, “The Institute”, he writes he was very grateful to have had a great friend for many years with him, with whom he could count on everything: Russ Dorr. Dr. Russ Door was a brilliant doctor that helped Stephen King write almost all of his books, especially assisting him with scientific things. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2018.

Stephen King dedicated "The Institute" to his grandchildren, but he was thinking about Russ when he was about to finish the book. He misses his friend and partner a lot.

When I read this afterword, I immediately thought: he is so brave. Brave, because he showed his feelings to the world and has made many people not forget his friend. So, there's a stoft heart inside Sthepen King after all!

I really admire Stephen King a lot and those who have already read something about him, will agree with me.
